This quilt was inspired by a glorious trip that my family took to Yosemite the summer of 2003. This enormous fallen tree was still a source of life as it took on the flora and fauna of the forest. It seemed appropriate to write this quote from the ancient Roman Philosopher Seneca at the base of the quilt.

“If ever you come upon a grove of ancient trees which have grown to an exceptional height, shutting out a view of sky by a veil of pleached and intertwining branches, then the loftiness of the forest, the seclusion of the spot and your marvel at the thick unbroken shade in the midst of the open spaces, will prove to you the presence of Deity.”—Lucius Annaeus Seneca (5BC-65AD), translated by Gummere, 1918

This quilt won an Award of Distinction here at Artspace for our New Work 2004 Show.

This quilt was exhibited at the “Power of Excellence” show at SECCA in Winston- Salem, NC in Winter 2004. In 2005, it won an Honorable Mention at World Quilt/ New England and the World Quilt/Midwest.

This piece sold in 2005 and hangs in a private residence in Raleigh, NC
