Spider Orchids
35" x 25"

Brassia or Spider Orchids come from Cuba and Jamaica. The are known for their long and spreading petals. They have a very specific method for pollination, which is done by female spider-hunter wasps who sting the lip of the orchid (confusing it for a spider) and then stick their heads into the flower and mistakenly gather pollen to take to another pretending orchid! Scientific information from Wikipedia This quilt was displayed at Blue Spiral 1 Gallery in Asheville, NC for their Spring 2006 "Back to the Garden" show.
