It’s a clash of the titans! A collision between the galaxies NGC4038 and NGC4039. When galaxies collide the stars that compose them usually do not. This is because galaxies are mostly empty space and, however bright, stars only take up only a small amount of that space.

This quilt was sold in 2000 and now hangs in the office of the Chief of Astronomy and Physics at UNC-Chapel Hill.
