The Elephant’s eye is an energetic young star which is eating away the dust of a dark cometary globule. Jets and winds of particles emitted from this star are also pushing away ambient gas and dust. Nearly 3,000 light-years distant, this nebula, aka IC 1396, covers a region of the sky with an apparent width of more than 10 full moons. This quilt was inspired by astrophotography by Jean-Charles Cuillandre of the Canada,France, Hawaii Telescope
This quilt has won three National Awards! In 2011 a Niche Award in Baltimore Maryland In 2010 an Honorable Mention in Hampton Virginia for the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival and a third place at the American Quilters Society Show in Knoxville Tennessee. In 2013 it was part of a solo exhibition in Raleigh NC at Lee Hansley’s Gallery and then also In 2013 this quilt was chosen for a “Piedmont Craftsmen Invitational” to celebrate their 50th Anniversary and shown at Blue Spiral 1 Gallery, Asheville, NC
